Railway Approvals utilises the professional skills and knowledge of a variety of personnel to deliver effective certification services. Find out more about specific functions below.

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors of Railway Approvals are not directly involved in Certification Activities.

The Railway Approvals Board receives a report from the Supervisory Board at least annually concerning the integrity of Railway Approvals independence and impartiality controls.

Supervisory Board

The Supervisory Board provides and independent review of the certification activities of Railway Approvals, with particular regard to the controls for impartiality and independence.

The Supervisory Board sits annually, the next Supervisory Board is scheduled to meet in April 2020.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Independent specialist review of Railway Approvals certification processes with regard to independence and impartiality controls.

  • Recommend improvement actions as necessary, based on outcome of independent specialist review to ensure that the integrity of Railway Approvals independence and impartiality controls are maintained.

 

The Railway Approvals Supervisory Board meet at our Derby Office where the Independent members review our performance. Railway Approvals would invite all of our customers or other industry stakeholders to provide feedback on our performance, either through correspondence, or by attending the Supervisory Board in person.  If you wish to contribute to the Supervisory Board then please contact us.

Nick Goodhand
General Manager

The General Manager is appointed by and reports to the Directors of Railway Approvals in accordance with the company's working arrangements and operates in accordance with the defined terms of reference for the role, being responsible for commercial and financial performance, in respect of certification activities including:

  • Providing input to strategic direction and development of Railway Approvals.

  • Reporting to the Railway Approvals Board of Directors on company performance.

  • Providing leadership and guidance and ensuring that the business systems support compliance to certification system requirements.

Head of Railway Approvals

The Head of Railway Approvals reports to the Railway Approvals Supervisory Board and ensures that all Railway Approvals certification work is delivered in accordance with Railway Approvals Policies and Procedures.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Providing input to the strategic direction and the development of Railway Approvals.

  • Ensuring the integrity and independence/impartiality of Railway Approvals systems with specific regard to related body activities (particularly by DB-ESG, part of Deutsche Bahn).

  • Providing leadership and guidance and ensuring compliance to certification system requirements.

Certification Systems Manager

The RAL Delivery Manager is responsible for the delivery of a portfolio of multi-discipline projects to achieve quality, financial and delivery requirements within the Railway Approvals team and deliver high levels of customer satisfaction.

 

The role is more extensive than just project management and encompasses elements of team management as well as financial performance of RAL.

The Certification Systems Manager is responsible for the integrity of the Railway Approvals documented assessment systems and procedures.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Review the Auditing, Assessment and Certification processes to ensure their continuing effectiveness in complying with NoBo/DeBo, RIS-2700-RST, ISO/IEC 17020/17065, RISAB and ROGS regulatory requirements.

  • Update procedures according to the requirements arising from audits and other related activities.

  • Manage programme of internal audits to review compliance with documented procedures.

RISAB Manager
Assessment Engineers

The RISAB Manager has specific responsibilities in overseeing RISAB work, especially the interface with RSSB. This includes:

  • Providing input to strategic direction and development of Railway Approvals.

  • Managing day-to-day RISAB activities.

  • Ensuring the integrity and independence/impartiality of Railway Approvals with particular regard to related body activities (DB-ESG).

  • Providing leadership and guidance and ensuring compliance with certification system requirements.

Suitably competent engineers and supporting staff will carry out the certification assessment work, according to their individual competency and signatory status. Typically, such staff will be seconded to Railway Approvals from DB-ESG (part of Deutsche Bahn) or engaged by contract. A list of engineers working for Railway Approvals and their individual qualifications/areas of competency are held by the Head of Railway Approvals.

  • Carry out all certification assessment work in an independent and impartial manner

  • Ensure due diligence in complying with all specific requirements of each certification process.
